Color Calibration

color space

Color accuracy is an important component of our services. Further To Fly’s workflow is color calibrated start-to-finish with third-party hardware and software to ensure consistent color reproduction matching international standards. We use Datacolor’s Spyder 5 Studio calibration system and ASUS IPS high-end color monitors to ensure we meet uniform color standards. For our standard print media selections we use manufacturer’s ICC profiles for media and printer matching, and if not available, we make our own profiles. We understand color calibration methodology and use it with every print.

We highly recommend that you use color calibration in your digital art processing, electronic display and soft-proofing, and that you use wide-gamut color spaces such as Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB in your image creation (then convert to sRGB for Internet-viewing). If you plan to use giclée prints with any frequency in your digital art, it is wise to make the small investment in learning and using third-party calibration equipment. Here and here are good articles that will familiarize you with the topic and suggest quality third-party hardware/software.

Warning: You may have noticed computer operating systems and monitor/graphics software provide self-calibration utilities. These are inadequate for true color calibration because they have no reference to an external standard. They may improve the grayscale (luminance) performance you see, but cannot achieve an objective color standard. They also cannot analyze and compensate for ambient light in your workspace, which affects color perception.

If you require color accuracy and are not using a color-calibrated workflow, you should make use of Further to Fly’s proofing services. You can be assured that if we see anything about your image that looks questionable, we will contact you before printing.
